I'm 200% with you on this. It's what makes the EU not only so great, but also the pinnacle of civilised society.

No man is an island, no man can stand and survive alone, and equally, no country can survive if it cuts itself off from the rest of the world. Sure, such an isolated society can exist for a time, but in the course of time it will become subsumed by others around it, as those on the inside leave to build better lives.

The USA appears on course to isolate itself from the world, and that in itself will have far reaching consequences, not least, and I predict, the break up of the United States into country states, some of which will reach out to others around it, and others that won't, and in time these will collapse and likely merge with other less isolationist and more productive country states. This is America's existential moment on par with that of the USSR in the late 80's.
